Council of Geeks
США
Добавлен 11 авг 2012
On this channel we examine various aspects and impacts of geek fandom/culture through some genderfluid person ranting at the camera, the occasional group discussion, and if you go WAY back there's even some scripted shorts.
If it's geeky, they'll probably talk about it.
Remember, YOU are the council, she only run the meetings.

Steven Moffat Returns to write Doctor Who - a frustrated rant
Disgusting !
I actually enjoyed the finale...which wasnt without its problems of course, but generally was emotionally engaging and a lot of fun. The aforementioned issues for me were; 1 Sutekh was too easily (and suddenly) defeated. 2 Sutekh (being as he is, only interested in granting death to all living things), was oddly fixated on knowing the identity of Ruby's mum, to the point of allowing his greatest enemy to remain alive. 3 The undoing of universal decay by introducing 'death' to death didn't really hit for me. 4 Gabriel Woolf has such a fantastic and silky, malevolent voice and I'd have loved to hear more of it with less emphasis on the musical score (which seemed noticeably too loud). Actually, it's high time that we got full surround sound on Doctor Who which still sounds weird through my home cinema system regardless of audio settings. With Disney money now involved, I feel that we really should be getting Atmos on a great big bombastic sci-fi show such as this. Main overarching issue. All of these 8 episodes were too short and didn't allow for much nuance of plot or character development and even as a two parter, the return of Sutekh could have gone a lot further. I would have rather liked to see Sutekh win, and the entire season end on another cliffhanger - to be resolved either at xmas or even next season. All of that said, I loved every scene between Sutekh and the Doctor and the dusty devastation looked fantastic and expensive. Ncuti Gatwa has really 'become' the Doctor for me in a way that Jodie never managed to do and it's a joy to watch him develop his portrayal. I suppose my takeaway from this season as a whole is that no, it might not be perfect but my god, it's better than it has been in a long time!
I love that Mrs. Flood is NOT tied in to this big bad, who I didn't love
Not sure if it was said here already, but I actually didn't interpret Kate's holding the soldier's hand as romantic in nature. I could be wrong, but I figured it was platonic, and given Kate's display of caring and valuing of her soldiers in these episodes, it seemed like an extension from that. Frankly, I thought the soldier was lowkey flirting with the Doctor 🤔 🤷🏾♂️
Also, something else to consider when it came to the goodbye between the Doctor and Ruby. I could see where you're saying it feels odd with Ncuti's Doctor that this is his response. I would like to point out that though he did go through that healing era for the remainder of 14th's life, it doesn't necessarily mean he resolved all of his flaws, y'know? Yes, he has gotten much more openly expressive about feelings and emotions, but that wouldn't fully equate to him knowing how to handle one of the most difficult things for him: Saying Goodbye. The fact that he allowed himself to cry was growth. AND, he actually said the word "goodbye," which is a word he does not like saying (per Sarah Jane and River). He's only said it when 2nd bid farewell to Jamie and Zoe, 10th was forced by Sarah to say it, and now 15 to Ruby. Comparatively, most of their life the Doctor has sucked at it, and the changes they have made are really recent to 14th and 15th's incarnations when you think of behavior change and how long the Doctor has lived. Just my 2 cents and another lens to consider.
“No, it can’t be-“ “Why, yes it is. So shut your mouth or I will tell our little Doctor friend about that little 456 incident you pulled back in the day”
So happy that this channel exists! ❤ I've been so heart broken over the coverage of this series both in regular media and social media 😢
If it's good, people will watch. Period. It doesn't matter if it's woke or not. If you write the story to cater to a smaller subset of fans, it's not a big Surprise that the majority of fans will stop watching. If it's well-written, then that Fan-Base has a better chance of crossing over and watching the show. There is a 1:1 Correlation between good writing & interesting story to viewership.
Ordinary/Random things becoming meaningful through our own obsession with them worked surprisingly well for me. I work in research and I've spent so many hours and days, hunting the mystery of a datapoint. One reading that looked so damn promising, one blimp on a radar... just to realize it wasn't what I thought it was, sometimes after moths of work. The mystery of a seemingly clear signal that tells me 'thing x happened' but that never could be reproduced... That's what bias does to us. That's how our brains work. I've had situations where I convinced others 'this thing is pointing!' and they were on board and we searched for the answer. Saw patterns in data, etched towards understanding it, thought we got there... just to realize: there was nothing here to begin with. It was just a random occurence, an ordinary thing that looked extraordinary by accident. But to be fair: learning to accept these situations after you've invested yourself so much into it having meaning, was one of the hardest lessons I had to learn in my job. We ascribe meaning to things and now people still ask me about that one construct as if it was special and exciting, even though it never was. It has become meaningful to others and has shaped their understanding of my work. Has shaped their reality and how they approach it. That stuff is the true power of bias. We can't let go of a thought that manifested in our heads. I still agree the 'she didn't point before but now does!' was a bit too much. But the reasoning of 'ascribing meaning to a mundane thing gives it power over you' is more true and more immediate to our lives, than people realize. I only ever see it in the context of gods and mythical things but it can happen in our heads a lot of the time. And to a degree we don't truly register.
Hi loving your videos and your take on dr who will you do a video about the whole new series of dr who, your thoughts on it all? anyway hope your well take care . X
I’ll have that put Saturday
Great points Vera and your past self, not sure if you want me dead naming you so will stick to Vera. Your points of view have evolved i can see similarities in your past regeneration's way of thinking and your current one but in a good way its interesting to look back and see how things change over time not just looks but how your thought process slowly evolves over time.
I’m better now with Sutekh clinging to the TARDIS after recalling Sarah Jane seeing a projection of him at the beginning of PoM. Kinda planted that he was able to project at least a part of him so it could stick to the TARDIS and grow stronger.
I agree with you but IMO, DW in Capaldi (my favorite)'s era was also not about ordinary people having a big impact or acting as a group to help themselves. In twelve's last episode it's said that the universe only keeps on resisting evil thanks to the Doctor. In Heaven sent, they literally ended the story with "I think that's a hell of a bird"
I remember when this all happened. Clark DID throw Barrowman under the bus to get focus off of himself. Not from the video, but in a couple of off-topic remarks and interviews as well. BTW i luv ur glasses frames
Being a huge toon (and Bakshi) fan, this was a must see when it came out. Yes it was BONKERS. I still watch it every once in a while along with Monkeybone (2001 dir:Henry Selick). There's one to pull apart. 😄
I tried: 1. The Haunting of Villa Diodati 2. Revolution of the Daleks 3. Praxeus 4. Can You Here Me? 5. Fugitive of the Judoon 6. Spyfall part 1 7. Orphan 55 8. The Timeless Children 9. Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror 10. Spyfall part 2 11. Ascension of the Cybermen
Great Video. Whenever says "when did dr who become political/woke/gay" i ask them if they even watched it (same for Star Trek btw lol)
The death eaters were literally based on the Nazis who murdered lgbt peole like does this woman have any self awareness
My favorite is Smith because he really is "Just a madman with a box", and I love that The Doctor is just a time Lord who ran away with a box.
My thoughts: I don't mind that Sutekh did nothing, I like that Ruby's mom was normal. But I do think that it doesn't line up with some of the other scenes. The Doctor and Sutekh and Goblins all being there being why time is "raw" or whatever is fine, but Maestro said there was a hidden song, and that's something different. Sutekh being The One Who Waits is also weird since Maestro and Toymaker didn't really... interact with him. Harriet and everyone made it out like Sutekh was part of the Pantheon and had interactions with the others, but, like, he's just been sitting in the TARDIS. But I don't mind any of that. I enjoyed the emotional aspects of it, and I enjoyed The Doctor outright saying "I'm going to kill you, you forced me into this". I think it might be the most brutal and hands on murder he's done. Also the explanation that Louise was pointing to name her child is very silly, since no one would do that and no one would understand it. But also she was 15 in 2004 and had a bad home situation, so clearly she was chuuni. I think it's messy in terms of logistics, but ultimately I'm fine because I liked the rest.
I found it strange that carla never spoke properly to ruby about having found her biological mum, i mean its a bit insulting to her isnt it? Shes the woman who raised Ruby but there isnt a conversation or even just a line where Ruby acknowledges Carla as the woman who raised her
Chocolateer: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 14, 15, 12 Chocolateer that Says he would but wouldnt really Kill children: 6 Got fired as a Chocolateer for killing children: 9 Kill Children: 7, war, 10, 11, fugitive She wouldn't kill children per say but she would let them suffocate or get tortured by nazis: 13
IMO: 1. Demons of the Punjab 2. It Takes You Away 3. The Witchfinders 4. Arachnids in the UK 5. The Ghost Monument 6. Rosa 7. The Tsuranga Conundrum 8. The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos 9. The Woman Who Fell to Earth 10. Kerblam!
No it hasn't
Good argument. Well supported.

Straight men are just hilarious about sci-fi. Even just the concept of Doctor Who is so incredible camp in every way. But like also so is Star Trek. Idk it’s funny to me
Also I can’t believe you didn’t mention Jack kissing 9
I only have Roku so my only way to watch is iPlayer I physically can’t watch it on BBC actual tv

I am endlessly grateful to Big Finish for making me completely rethink my opinion on the Sixth Doctor and Colin Baker. If someone asked me before I've listened to his first audiostory, who was my least favorite Doctor, I would've said Sixth without missing a beat. Now he is one of my most favorites, and his pairing with Constance Clarke is one of the best TARDIS dream teams I've ever seen in Doctor Who. The show was really spiraling after Davidson left, and didn't complement Colin Baker's acting capabilities, and it's sad. I am so glad he was given another chance.
This is something I actually really liked about Vox Machina. It's rated TV-MA and the characters swear and make inappropriate jokes and the violence is *really* graphic. It is NOT a show for children, and it should not be shown to them. But...they also talk like real people, and the artwork is beautiful. They're telling a serious story (with plenty of funny moments too) and using animation because it's the best way to tell it. I'm not opposed to animated comedies for adults, of course, but I feel like that's almost all there is in the world of western adult animation, and all of it just wants to shock you with how gross it can be. No thanks.
I'm a thirteen's era stan, but I can't with Kerblam!, I just can't. The message is too f*ck up for me not to skip it when I do a rewatch (even though Yaz has great scenes in it and I really love her character).
I enjoy this character but I have an issue with the ONLY ever trans person on the show being a villain. Also, isn't RTD the one who said "oh, no, we couldn't have DT in thirteen's clothes, that's too touchy with how trans people are treated right now". I like most of his writing but I just don't trust the guy.
Only trans person? What are you talking about? Donna's daughter Rose is trans, and so is the actor. And that's a recurring character.
Vera. I have been a fan of your channel since Eccelston. I’m not sure why you are being so aggressive this season about romantic sun-plots. Sure, you don’t like them and have always been upfront about that, but I feel like you’re starting to tilt at windmills on the topic. I don’t think that there was anything going on romantically with Kate and the Guard. After they all came back he was very touchy with everybody and I think it was a genuine seeking connection after that brush with death. His fumble for a hand, any hand, was clearly not a romantic gesture and Kate looked surprised and then looked up at him with kindness and compassion. She gets how this kind of thing can affect people and she’s just allowing him the comfort he needs right now. Please stop harping about romantic subplots. You’re such an amazing commentator and reviewer and it’s really throwing off the flow of your pieces. Thanks!
There were rumours that Milly Gibson had to leave the show early and the ending seems a bit rushed. I guess there hadn’t been much of a mention about her father until now because there wasn’t much to go on. Davina (or T least the producers of the show she presents) couldn’t find any trace of DNA until a few years later and The Doctor never really stuck around anywhere long enough to have much to go on beyond seeing a mysterious cloaked woman. However the logistics don’t make any sense. The only people around are The Doctor and the Goblins trying to eat Baby Ruby. As soon as The Doctor destroyed the Goblin ship it was implied he immediately went back to 2024 to check Ruby had returned to existence. So who knew her birth mother was pointing at a sign to name her and why was she wearing a hooded cloak? Obviously The Doctor is going to survive the Christmas special so maybe Mrs Flood will show up again in Season 2. Hopefully she won’t be dragged out for too long like River Song was.
No no no, it isn't the worst DW. I watched it with friends, we laughed so much! One of the best evenings in my life! Sorry that you didn't enjoy it one bit
Is this sarcasm or did you not watch the review?
I guess, me and RTD just really vibe, because I love everything he ever did with DW, including this season
You're pretty brave for doing this.
At the end when the doctor lists off the planets brought back I don't know if they mentioned skaro. that could be Davies trying to phase out the daleks (I know there has been negotiations with the baker Terry estate due to Disney getting involved but I don't know if it's public what the outcome of that was)
I also found it weird that 15 didn't say "I love you, too" but chalked it up to him regressing a bit, emotionally, after the events of the episode and the trauma of having to kill a sapient being. Also as a foundling who may never find out why his parents gave him up, he might have felt some type of way about Ruby getting her wish. Not jealousy, per se, but something close.
The lipstick you're wearing compliments your outfit so well
You look good bro
Thanks, sis.
Not sure if anyone has asked this yet, but if Sutekh was holding on to the Tardis all this time, does that mean he got duplicated when the newest Doctor got his Tardis???
Sooooooooo many people have asked. If you want a logistics breakdown, I don’t have one. If you want an appropriate narrative answer, it’s “no.”
I see your point about RTD's finals and he has his fare share of dodgy stories, however, almost the entirety of this episode is based on contrivances and McGuffins and the Doctor crying so many times I lost count. Re your point on not minding the Doctor crying, that's fine, but its the boy who cried wolf syndrome. If someone is constantly scared and crying, why should I care or get invested this time? I did like the scene with Ruby and her birth mother (yep her calling her "Mum" is weird to me too), though there's an important distinction with Ruby: she's a foundling not just adopted and that creates an entirely different dynamic. For me in TLJ Rey's parents being no one special meant that anyone could be a Jedi, it was empowering to a degree, here Ruby's parent's being just normal teenagers, completely undermines the entire series, including 73 Yards I'd also add that they seem to have forgotten that the Tardis was duplicated in the Giggle...how does that work where SueTECH is concerned?
Quoting BTVS: "Now I find myself needing to know the plural of apocalypse."
There’s an interesting idea this finally invites that I like to think about, which is that maybe the reason death has followed the Doctor so much since the 4th incarnation is because of Sutekh. Think about it… Like… Nyssa’s father dying, a quarter of the universe getting destroyed in “Logopolis,” Adric’s fate, the full-on extinction of Skaro by 7, basically every 8th Doctor companion’s fate being brutal, the Last Great Time War, virtually every modern companion, the Flux?? What if it was all because he was there from “Pyramids of Mars” onward, and that’s the point/significance of Ruby having a happy ending? Like, that’s possible now that Sutekh’s shadow is gone.
I personally used the sand in the trailers as justification for my Sutekh theory two weeks before Space Babies, it was a random fluke of a guess, and it also included the anagram Sue Tech, so maybe it was just me? But it was kinda obvious
I'm sure for the type of fan who does theorize it wasn't too hard. But I'm just not that kind of fan, and I avoid fan speculation as best I can.
Carla & Cherry being so accepting of Ruby's birth mom explaining why she never got in touch took me out of the moment. Oh its fine, there's no hate here... OK No hate, but no recriminations? Not even an arched eyebrow? I thought at least Cherry would have had something to say! And the reunion was written as a happy ending. But from the POV of the birth mother, she had 19 years to choose to find her daughter, but that was her choice not to! There is a privacy issue here. What if in the mother's life, there was no room for the abandoned child? Does her choice get any respect?
I want 24 episode seasons, with a mid season finale. In general, for everything except limited series.
Ruby called her bio mom, her real mom but Carla is her real mom. There's a weird obssession in media of characters finding out abut their bio family and then calling them their real family as if the loving adoptive family isn't enough.
Maybe the missing I love you is a British American divide? I didn't even notice that he didn't say the words I love you, because he'd already communicated it to her, by the other things that he said and the other things that he did. Actually saying the words seemed unnecessary and would have been trite? Unconvincing? Laboring it to the point of insincerity? Something in that area. Maybe it feels different to Americans.
By that argument, Ruby didn't need to say it either. But in my mind if she did it's because she feels it needs to be said, and that deserves a response.
@@CouncilofGeeks But he'd just told her that she had changed the way he looked at family etc. Her "I love you" was a response to that...?
I didn't think it worked in the last Jedi and I don't think it worked here either. If you set up a question in a story, there better be either a great answer or a great reason why there is no answer. Otherwise you're just playing silly buggers with the audience, which is not cute or cool It's just plain annoying. I thought this was the weakest part of this season. However it didn't stop me overall enjoying the episode and this season as a whole which I thought was generally pretty good and better than what we've had for a long time.
